Softwood Lumber Grader / Sawmill Quality Supervisor (Visual Grading)

About the Role

We are looking for specialists in softwood lumber grading and sawmill quality oversight to assist in the development of AI technology. You will apply your extensive industry knowledge to provide precise, rules-based insights that help train advanced AI models. By evaluating actual lumber examples, you will shape the way these systems interpret, analyze, and execute tasks in challenging grading environments. While no prior AI experience is necessary, your practical professional background and thorough command of lumber quality criteria are essential for ensuring superior data accuracy. Requirements

• You must hold a current or recent softwood lumber grader or sawmill quality control supervisor certification from an approved organization like the WWPA, NLGA, WCLIB, or SPIB.
• You should have extensive knowledge of visual lumber grading and be able to spot defects such as wane, knots, shake, warp, and checks in various softwood species.
• You need to be proficient in reading, interpreting, and correctly applying standard industry grading rules.
• You must possess excellent technical writing skills, the capability to clearly explain intricate grading choices, and a meticulous eye for detail.
• Practical experience in a sawmill setting is highly regarded, as is an understanding of quality control standards and grade recovery metrics.

Responsibilities

• You will examine and evaluate images and descriptions of softwood lumber to confirm adherence to standard visual grading criteria.
• You will detect and quantify lumber imperfections and establish proper grade thresholds according to official rulebooks.
• You will be responsible for making definitive grading decisions and justifying them by referencing specific regulations.
• You will inspect grade stamps for accuracy, review quality control processes for potential improvements, and communicate your reasoning both verbally and in writing to assist in training AI systems.
